Applied Research

We provide sound data to help nonprofits to make informed decisions.

The Forbes Funds invests in research — just as we invest in organizations and leaders. The findings and outcomes help us to anticipate, interpret and forecast the needs of the nonprofit sector, guide discussions throughout the year and promote action to move the nonprofit sector forward. Organizations need more than anecdotes and intuition to make decisions. Research provides knowledge so those of us who wish to “do good” can also “do well.”

The Forbes Funds also puts these research findings to use in our own efforts to inform our capacity building mission. Based on research outcomes, we may implement new programs or adjust our grantmaking strategies. We support applied research on a wide range of issues that have strategic significance for human service and community development as well as the nonprofit sector at large.

Our overall purpose is to enhance nonprofit sector effectiveness and create momentum for action by:

  • Generating and distributing original research of high relevance to the regional nonprofit sector

  • Serving as a neutral convener for the sector in planning, applying data and generating action

  • Informing and influencing The Forbes Funds’ grantmaking and other grantmakers
