On Tuesday, Feb 9, approximately 40 nonprofit CEO, CFOs, and senior leaders gathered to strengthen their knowledge of strategic financial models and spend time aligning financial and strategic priorities.
The full-day training was hosted by The Forbes Funds and led by Fiscal Management Associates (FMA) CEO Hilda Polanco and Director John Summers.
Focus of the day's workshop included the relationship between financial and strategic planning; business model analysis; the strategic financial planning process; and building a financial model.
One of the topics considered was achieving strategic organizational goals with current financial resources. This is about "moving from asking ourselves, 'where do we want to go?' - to the question of 'how are we going to get there?'" said Polanco.
Using their own financials, participants worked to answer these questions through the application of a financial model. FMA produced the model specifically for The Forbes Funds and this cohort process.
"The facilitators presented not only the case for strategic forecasting but provided much needed tools and templates," said a participant. "I know that the session today will allow [our organization] to utilize the financial models to evaluate ... and develop new services which will help us achieve our sustainability strategic goal."
The cohort is comprised of 12 agencies and will meet multiple times over the next three months. Cohorts are a key piece of The Forbes Funds' spectrum of capacity building services, emphasizing training as well as peer to peer learning.
"The format for the session was well designed," said a participant. "It allowed networking opportunity with other agencies at the same time provided the space for strategic thought with my CFO and I."
