Meet the inaugural Wishart Nonprofit Executive Fellows

2017 Wishart Fellows (from left): Fred Brown, Cynthia James, Eric Lindey.

Last February we announced the Wishart Nonprofit Executive Fellowship, which funded three outstanding nonprofit leaders to attend a "lean innovation" leadership program at Carnegie Bosch Institute.
We received 41 applications - many from strong, successful candidates. To be eligible, candidates were required to be executives (but not exclusively Executive Directors) with a long track record of working in community-based organizations that provide human services, behavioral health, physical health, and/or community building services within Allegheny County.
We are excited to introduce the 2017 Wishart Nonprofit Executive Fellows - and share what gets them excited about the opportunity to apply "lean innovation" approaches to their nonprofit work.

Fred Brown
President & CEO, The Homewood Children's Village

"I am excited about the opportunity because the complexity of today's society requires a non-traditional approach that incorporates the role of business. In the context of a global economy, maximizing the resilience of the most vulnerable population will be critical to promoting social transformation."

Cynthia James
President & CEO, Youth Places

"With the consistent uncertainty of the nonprofit sector's funding support, I feel it is time now, more than ever, to be pragmatic and innovative in our approaches to sustainability. Our population's needs will increase and it's not just enough to ask for more money, but to establish new solutions-based approaches to addressing the demand. I'm excited to be a part of this group of dynamic thinkers and strategists and hope to garner innovative approaches to critical issues plaguing the future of the nonprofit sector."

Eric Lindey
President & CEO, Partners for Quality, Inc.

"I believe that this fellowship will provide me the opportunity to learn best practices that I can share with my organization to provide the level of service that both service participants and our staff deserve."

What's next for the Wishart Fellows?

As a part of their program, Wishart Fellows will be sharing their experiences with The Forbes Funds - and eventually, the community at large. Sign up for Forbes Funds news to be the first to get event announcements.
Launched in 2004 through the generosity of Alfred "Burr" Wishart, the long-term CEO of The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management recognized one agency every year as an exemplar of nonprofit management excellence. We have remade this award into a fellowship - an investment in leaders - to celebrate Wishart's esteemed legacy of valuing the nonprofit sector as one of the most important components of American life.
