Member Spotlight: The Midwife Center for Birth and Women's Health

Unifying the voice of nonprofits to leverage their power

Founded in 1982, The Midwife Center for Birth & Women’s Health is southwestern PA’s only licensed and accredited freestanding birth center. It offers primary gynecological care, prenatal care and childbirth in a warm and supportive birth center. The Midwife Center's (TMC’s) goal is to provide safe and satisfying care that is personalized to meet the needs of clients and their families. Staff is guided by the philosophy that a woman should be in control of her own health care, including her birth experience.

TMC accepts medical assistance, most private insurance plans and can provide sliding-scale care to those without insurance.

TMC’s primary gynecological services include annual exams and pap tests; contraceptives including IUDs and oral contraceptives; STI and vaginal infection screening and treatment; menopausal care; and more. Individuals can call to make an appointment or come to With Woman Fridays, a walk-in program every Friday from 12:30-5:00pm. TMC also offers Con Mujeres, a walk-in GYN program for Spanish-speaking individuals the first Friday of every month.

Prenatal care and childbirth services are provided at The Midwife Center’s home-like facility by a team of certified nurse midwives and nurses. TMC’s midwives have collaborative agreements with physicians at UPMC Mercy and West Penn Hospital for women who want or need hospital care. TMC offers a one-hour initial appointment and 20-minute regular prenatal visits; standard prenatal testing; consultation with physician specialists as-needed; prenatal classes; postpartum care; breastfeeding support; and more. TMC is proud to offer comfort measures like nitrous oxide and water therapy during labor, and clients are free to labor in their position of comfort with as many or a few companions as desired.

TMC also has a class scholarship program, which allows it to offer classes on a sliding-scale, as well as free diapers from the Diaper Bank and vouchers from the East End Community Thrift Store for eligible clients.

Forest Room Birth Suite

Exciting new programs and services are in the works for 2017! TMC’s facility is currently under construction to build a 6,000 square foot expansion adjacent to its current location. It plans to add behavioral health services for all clients with a licensed behavioral health specialist; in-house blood draws for required prenatal testing; two new birth suites with tubs for water birth; increased accessibility with its new entrance, parking, and elevator; additional appointment rooms, a classroom, space for families and support people and more.
