PITTSBURGH, PA – October 13, 2015 — More than 1,200 nonprofit executives, public officials, and business leaders will convene on Thursday, October 15, 2015 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for Summit 2015: Our Region Wins When We Work Together, the largest conference of private, public, and nonprofit organizations in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Summit 2015: Our Region Wins When We Work Together is a biennial conference hosted by the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership (GPNP), a growing coalition of over 420 regional nonprofits convened by The Forbes Funds. The event is designed to strengthen the relationships between the nonprofit, public, and private sectors to solve critical community challenges; to celebrate the important work of nonprofits; and to strengthen the voice of all organizations — including those in economic and community development, health and human services, and arts and environment.

Summit 2015 will feature a keynote address by international entrepreneur, philanthropist, restaurateur, and mission-driven nonprofit leader Kimbal Musk. Musk, along with his brother Elon Musk, founded and advised several companies including: The Kitchen, The Kitchen Community, Zip2 (acquired by Compaq), PayPal (acquired by EBay), Everdream (acquired by Dell), Tesla Motors, SpaceX, and SolarCity. Musk will provide a vision that promises to be part inspiration, part real world experience, as he discusses the intersection of public, private, and nonprofit organizations and helps to establish a road map to navigate the critical partnerships between these sectors.

Joining Musk as presenters are Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief Cameron McClay, Allegheny County Health Department Director Dr. Karen Hacker, Pittsburgh Foundation President and CEO Maxwell King, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania President and CPO Robert Nelkin, Grable Foundation Executive Director Gregg Behr, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Director Dr. Donald Schwarz, along with many other distinguished leaders from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Southwestern Pennsylvania is home to an important network of nonprofit organizations in the region’s urban and rural areas. “The Pittsburgh region alone is home to 2,674 active nonprofits that spend about $12 billion annually on the well-being of our region’s citizens,” said GPNP Executive Director Samantha Balbier.  “These organizations hold more than $20 billion in assets and, along with their peer organizations across the western part of the state, are unquestionably a political, social, and economic force. Evidencing just how the nonprofit community may exercise leadership collectively, the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Partnership already counts among its membership nearly 420 organizations, making it the largest metropolitan association of nonprofits nationwide. GPNP advocates to strengthen the voice of the nonprofit sector in regional decision making.”

Business executives and government officials will participate in the Summit in order to share their ideas about the role of nonprofits and how public and private organizations can work together.

Huntington Bank, the Alcoa Foundation, UPMC, and The Grable Foundation are the Summit’s lead sponsors. Additionally, local foundations and corporations including The Heinz Endowments, The Forbes Funds, Hillman Family Foundations, Buhl Foundation, Eden Hall Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, McCune Foundation, The Benedum Foundation, United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, McCauley Ministries, BDO, Maher Duessel, Massaro, BNY Mellon, and Highmark are providing support for the Summit.
